2023 Vision of the Republic of Turkey – President Erdoğan delivering a speech


The Republic of Turkey
is preparing for the year 2023, its 100th anniversary year of establishment.

Turkey has taken giant steps in the years after establishment in 1923, to travel a modernization journey of almost 100 years. From a nation with no resources, no factories and and no literacy, it has climbed up the ladder to its place among fastest developing countries in the world.

Today, it is accepted in global political and economical environments that Turkey is going to be the shining star of tourism and economy in the coming years.

In parallel to this fast development, the government in power currently (2011), has set forth a bunch of goals/targets to be met by 2023, referred to as 2023 Vision of Turkey and announced it in a declaration.

It is defined in said statement that Turkey will

(Economy)

  • Take place among the top 10 economies in the world by the year 2023
  • Achieve, by 2014, a gross domestic product of $1 trillion
  • Achieve, by 2023, a gross domestic product of $2 trillion
  • Increase annual Turkish exports to $500 billion
  • Achieve per capita income of 25 thousand dollars
  • Achieve a foreign trade volume of 1 trillion dollars
  • Increase employment rate by 10 points (30 million people will be working)
  • Reduce unemployment rate in Turkey to 5 percent.

(Energy)

  • Build 20.000 MegaWatt installed capacity for wind energy and 600 MegaWatt installed capacity for geothermal energy
  • Use 20 percent less energy than in 2010, by more efficiently utilizing available energy resources
  • Have at least 3 operating nuclear power plants

(Foreign policy)

  • First, Turkey aims to achieve all EU membership conditions and become an influential EU member state by 2023. Second, it will continue to strive for regional integration, in the form of security and economic cooperation. Third, it will seek to play an influential role in regional conflict resolution. Fourth, it will vigorously participate in all global arenas. Fifth, it will play a determining role in international organizations and become one of the top 10 largest economies in the world.
  • To achieve them, Turkey must make progress in all directions and in every field, take an interest in every issue related to global stability, and contribute accordingly.

(Health care)

  • No citizens will be outside the health insurance system
  • Raise the number of physicians per 100,000 people to 210 physicians

(Transport)

  • Build 11 thousand kilometers of new railway
  • Expand high-speed train network
  • Build 15 thousand kilometers of divided highway
  • Have one of the 10 largest ports in the world
  • Turkish engineers producing own airplane, unmanned aerial vehicle and satellite

(Tourism)

  • To make Turkey the fifth largest tourist destination by 2023
  • Host 50 million visitors in Turkey
  • Obtain 50 billion USD of tourism revenue
