American pastor Andrew Brunson to appear in court today with hopes to be released

Pastor Andrew Brunson is under house arrest after having spent more than a year in prison in the Aegean province of Izmir. He has been on trial accused of crimes such as spying on behalf of terror organizations PKK and FETÖ.

The prosecutor has demanded 35 years of prison sentence for said crimes. The relations between the USA and Turkey have been severely deteriorated due to Brunson’s arrest with Donald Trump demanding his immediate release. Regarding the issue President Erdogan has said “Turkey is a country of rule of law and court decisions are binding for everyone”.

Brunson is going to appear before judge today again. Some opinion leaders forecast that the court may rule in favor by releasing him (ending his house arrest) with ban on leaving the country. Said ban could be lifted after a few weeks.

The case of Brunson has caused some of the worst periods to be experienced in USA Turkey relations, in the history of two allies. US president imposed several bans on Turkey and commercial area in specific wiith Turkey trying to retaliate.

These undesired developments have even worsened the relations between two allies who have already been in conflict with each other in Syria, for a while. The hope is that the release of the pastor could be the first step on the way to repairing the relations between two countries.
