Arasta Bazaar, not the most popular spot at Sultanahmet, but unique and relaxing

There are so many places to visit on daily tours to Istanbul. Usually the most popular ones are mostly quite crowded. Some others on the other hand are not as crowded but they offer their visitors a pleasant and special time, as well. ARASTA BAZAAR at Sultanahmet is one of these less known but equally unique spots.

Another name of the ARASTA BAZAAR just behind the Blue Mosque is SIPAHILER Bazaar. The reason for this is that products were sold here for the SIPAHIs (cavalrymen) long time ago, and hence the name “Sipahiler Bazaar” was also used.

Due to a fire that broke out in 1912 many shops burned down and were severely damaged. During the excavations in the 1930s, various mosaics were found and it was understood that this place had been built on structures dating back to the Byzantine period.

After the works carried out by VAKIFLAR GENEL MÜDÜRLÜĞÜ (the General Directorate of Foundations) in the 1980s, the bazaar was restored and made ready for use. Today, a variety of different products such as carpets, rugs, jewelry, clothing and handmade items are sold in 70 shops at this place. You can also find Iznik tiles and ceramic items in some of the shops, here.

Most of those who visit Arasta come here after visiting Sultanahmet and Hagia Sophia, first. Those who come to the bazaar in a different mood and still under the spell of those magnificent architectural structures can enjoy a different atmosphere here, while relaxing with a cup of Turkish coffee.

There is also a museum in Arasta Bazaar where you can see the mosaics that were unearthed during the excavations. The museum is  called Arasta Bazaar Mosaic Museum or the Great Palace Mosaics Museum.
