Automobile sales in Turkey decline substantially in May 2018

Automotive is among the locomotive sectors of the Turkish economy. In fact, Turkey exports substantial quantities of vehicles to many countries. However it was mentioned in the report shared by The Association of Automotive Distributors (ODD) that automobile and light commercial vehicle sales in Turkey had declined by 14.83 percent in May 2018 compared to the previous year.

The biggest decline in the market was seen in light commercial vehicles with 20.87 percent, while automobile sales experienced a loss of 13 percent. A total of 72 thousand 755 vehicles were sold in this period.

According to the first five months of the year, the total market for automobiles and light commercial vehicles declined to 302 thousand 311 units corresponding to a decrease of 4.78 percent compared to the same period of the previous year. In the first five months of 2017, a total of 317,500 units were realized. On the other hand, the share of automatic transmission vehicles increased to 65.12 percent

At the end of May, car sales fell by 2.4 percent for vehicles below 1600cc, 1.4 percent for vehicles in 1600-2000cc range and 27 percent above 2000cc. During this period, 84 electric and 843 hybrid cars were sold.
