Iraqi Kurdish Regional Government President Mesut Barzani made a new statement about the referendum planned to be held on September 25th. Mesut Barzani, the head of the Iraqi Kurdish Regional Government said “We rejected the proposals to postpone the referendum” and added “Do not listen to anyone, we are going to referendum”.

According to reports in the Northern Iraqi press, Barzani used the expression “No alternative was offered to us to postpone the referendum”.

Barzani addressed his supporters at a “Yes Meeting”.

Referring to the alternative proposed by the US, Britain and the United Nations he said “Until now, an alternative to equal the referendum has not reached us. Referendum is a tool for reaching independence but it is not the target. Our goal is independence. Therefore the referendum will not be postponed”.

“The biggest problem is that our brothers in Baghdad do not accept a real partnership. Sorry but we do not accept to become a servant for you, either.

Barzani said, “Yes, there is a risk in this process, but if we do not do this and take the necessary steps, worse things may happen. The point here is willpower. The willpower of Kurdish people needs to be strong. Then, success will follow.

Responding to the criticism that the referendum does not have international legal basis, Barzani said, “The referendum will be given legitimacy by the Kurdish people”.

In the meantime, IKBY Assembly convened and accepted the referendum decision.
