glaxosmithklineTurkey’s financial capital will be the regional management center of British pharmaceuticals group GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), displacing Dubai to run the company’s Middle Eastern and African operations.

GSK will be joining other drug producers Roche and Novo Nordisk in setting up their regional headquarters in Istanbul, Turkey’s transcontinental city with over 12 million inhabitants. The regional headquarters in Istanbul will run GSK’s operations in 30 countries.

“Turkey’s emerging power status combined with Istanbul’s rise as an important air travel hub are behind the company’s decision to move its regional management center to Istanbul,” according to Abbas Huseyin, Asia-Pacific and Emerging Markets Director of GSK. “Turkish Airlines flies directly to our target markets from Istanbul, making the 30 countries in GSK’s Middle East and Africa group countries easily accessible,” he said.

50 international companies including Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Microsoft and Unilever have their regional headquarters set up in Istanbul, running their operations in Eastern Europe, Central Asia, the Middle East and Africa.
