Radical Islamist militants launched a bomb and shooting attack on a mosque in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula during Fridays prayers, leaving at least 200 people dead in the restive region, according to state media. The massacre took place at the al-Rawdah mosque in the town of Bir al-Abd, 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the capital of North Sinai, el-Arish.

The death toll could rise further in what is the deadliest attack in the region in recent years to surpass the downing of a Russian jet in October 2015 that killed all 224 people on board.

A BOMB attack at a mosque has left more than 200 people dead and 100 injured, with gunmen picking off survivors leaving the scene of the explosion in ambulances. Suspected militants set off a bomb and opened fire at the Al-Rawdah mosque, targeting supporters of the security forces attending prayers there, two eyewitnesses and a security source said. (UPDATE: Death toll in the mosque attack has risen to 305 – 25 Nov 2017)

Witnesses said survivors fleeing the original blast were attacked by gunmen who arrived in at least four SUVs afte the explosion.  The gunmen opened fire on the crowd fleeing the attack, as well as on ambulances ferrying those hurt in the blast to the hospital.  Eyewitnesses reported around 30 ambulances ferrying wounded from the scene to nearby hospitals.

The atack took place at the end of Friday prayers, when the mosque was at its busiest. Egyptian politician Mustafa Bakri said masked attackers had attacked worshippers. Egypt’s government has declared three days of mourning after attack. President Abdel Fattah al Sisi convened an emergency security meeting soon after the attack, state television reported.
