Erdoğan to meet with Russian leader Putin on Thursday, September 28
In reply to a question about Turkey’s relations with Russia and criticisms that Turkey is to purchase the S-400’s long-range missile systems from that country, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he would talk to Russian President Vladimir Putin over the phone on Monday and they would come together on for dinner on Thursday.
Erdogan pointed out that some countries in NATO had stronger weapons than S-400 systems as well as nuclear ones and added “Now when Syria has S-400 as a neighboring country, we as Turkey have to be in the effort to own S-400, S-500 systems, or even an S-600. These are the steps we need to take to protect ourselves. There are also steps we need to take about ballistic missiles. It is our duty as administrators to protect Turkey, a country of 80 million people. We’ll do whatever required for this, from A to Z. What are we to do if we cannot get the weapons we want from NATO countries? We will take care of ourselves”.
On the other hand, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s Spokesman Dmitriy Peskov had said that a meeting would take place between Erdoğan and Putin after Erdoğan’s meeting with US President Donald Trump in New York, where President Erdogan went to attend the UN General Assembly.
Peskov, who made a brief statement about the unplanned summit preparation between the leaders of Turkey and Russia, said “There is intense work regarding the talks between the leaders of the two countries. When the program is clear, we will inform the public.”
