Former German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel emphasized the importance of Turkey for the West. Gabriel said “We have to keep Turkey connected to the West”. Gabriel who spoke to a news network drew attention to Turkey’s importance for Europe and said “We must do everything to keep Turkey connected to the West for our own interest”.

Gabriel also added following; “If we isolate Turkey this country will seek ways to make nuclear weapons in the long run like the case with North Korea”.

Gabriel called on the European Union and emphasized that the message that Germany and Europe did not support “Trump’s policy to cause instability in this country”, should be clearly given to Turkey.

Gabriel also said “For me, the US is in an attitude that should not be displayed towards a NATO member country. The US is dragging a country that is already in a difficult economic situation into the cliff by imposing sanctions”.

In reply to the question “what would happen if Turkey were to be removed from the Nato?” Gabriel replied “I’m afraid nationalists in Turkey would eventually resort to the nuclear bomb as Iran and North Korea, for protection”.
