RUSSIAN-TOURISTS-TURKEYHope for Turkish tourism to recover during the rest of the 2016 tourism season

Tourism has been a major source of revenue for Turkey for many years now. It goes without saying it has been a life saver for the budget deficit, too, until the warplane conflict with Russia when Turkey downed the Russian plane claiming its airspace was violated despite several warnings. The killing of the Russian pilot of the plane by jihadist groups turned out to be another major problem between the two countries.

It did not take Turkey long to find out at the expense of large losses both financial and reputation on the international arena that Putin was not a partner to dance in dangerous waters. Anyway and to cut a long story short the Turkish President cornered by several problems both local and regional, had to realize that there was no other choice except for making a shift in political strategies and relations with neighboring countries.

Until this drastically important decision to alter attitude towards Israel and Russia in specific, the Turkish tourism sector had to through the worst time it had ever experienced as Putin had seen to it that no Russian tourist came over to Turkish Mediterranean to spend money there. The hotels were empty and businesses came to the edge of going bankrupt. In fact it was reported that many facilities had closed down to add to loss of foreign currencies and increase in unemployment figures.

After Erdoğan (Turkish president) sent a letter to PUTIN conveying his message that he was sorry for what had happened and Turkey was ready to make up for deteriorated relations the Russian president gave his consent for a long-waited flow of Russian tourists to Turkey, to spend their holidays in this beautiful part of the Mediterranean.

In fact it was reported by Reuters on the July 4th that Charter flights from Russia to Turkey would resume on July 7 following the recent improvement in ties.

To recap, one can hope today the sector still has chances of surviving because the timing for reconciliation between two countries was not too late – thanks God – and millions of Russians on top of the Israelis expected to flow into the region will certainly become a life-saving hand for the sector to heal its wounds.
