Inflation for May 2012 announced by Turkish Statistical Institute

Inflation figures for May 2012 were announced by Turkey’s Statistical Institute. Figures are excerpted down below:

PRODUCER PRICE INDEX, MAY 2012

Monthly change in PPI was realised by 0,53%.

A rise in general index was realised in the 2003 based Producer Price Index on the previous month by 0,53%, on December of the previous year by 1,27%, on same month of the previous year by 8,06% and on the twelve months moving averages basis by 10,57% in May 2012.

Monthly changes were 3,65% in the index of agriculture and -0,12% in the index of industry.

PPI of agriculture increased 4,63% compared with December of the previous year, 7,72% compared with the same month of the previous year, 3,96% on the averages of twelve months basis. PPI of industry section increased 0,57% compared with December of the previous year, 8,13% compared with the same month of the previous year and 12,01% on the averages of twelve months basis.

The highest monthly increase in the PPI of industrial activities was recorded 1,70% in the index for tobacco products.

PPI increased 0,89% in the index for electricity, gas and water, 0,25% in the index for mining and stone quarrying, decreased -0,26% in the index for manufacturing.

The high rates of monthly increase in PPI by sub divisions were in the industrial price indices for tobacco products (1,70%), for crude petroleum and natural gas production (0,95%), for food products and beverages (0,94%), for water (0,94%), for stone quarrying and other mining (0,91%), for electricity and gas (0,88%). On the other hand indices declined for coke and refined petroleum (-6,45%), for office accounting computing machinery (-4,26%), for furniture and other products (-1,68%), for basic metal industry (-1,15%), for publishing and printing (-1,10%), for motor vehicles (-1,02%), for metallic minerals (-1,01%).

In May 2012 within average prices of 791 items in the index, average prices of 178 items remained unchanged while average prices of 325 items increased and average prices of 288 items decreased.

CONSUMER PRICE INDEX, MAY 2012

Monthly change in CPI was realised by -0,21%.

A decrease in general index was realised in the 2003 based Consumer Price Index on the previous month by -0,21 %, and a rise on December of the previous year by 2,87%, on same month of the previous year by 8,28%, on the twelve months moving averages basis by 8,68% in May 2012.

The highest monthly increase was 8,60% in the index for clothing and footwear by main expenditure groups. The indices rose for education 1,10%, for hotels, cafes and restaurants 0,92%, for recreation and culture 0,33%, for miscellaneous goods and services 0,23%, for alcoholic beverages and tobacco 0,14%, for health 0,10%, for housing 0,04%, while the index declined for communication -0,20%, for furnishings and household equipment -0,48%, for transportation -1,36%, for food and non-alcoholic beverages -2,40%.

The highest increase was 18,70% in the index for alcoholic beverages and tobacco compared with the same month of the previous year. Miscellaneous goods and services (15,15%), housing (12,54%), furnishings and household equipment (9,89%), hotels, cafes and restaurants (9,43%), clothing and footwear (8,58%) were the other indices where high increases were realised.

The highest monthly increase in CPI by regional basis was in TR22 (Balıkesir, Çanakkale) region (0,34%). The highest increases in CPI were recorded in TR61 (Antalya, Isparta, Burdur) region (3,67%) compared with the December of the previous year, TR71 (Kırıkkale, Aksaray, Niğde, Nevşehir, Kırşehir) region (10,43%) compared with the same month of the previous year and in TR71 (Kırıkkale, Aksaray, Niğde, Nevşehir, Kırşehir) region (10,36%) on the twelve months moving averages basis.

In May 2012 within average prices of 444 items in the index, average prices of 83 items remained unchanged while average prices of 255 items increased and average prices of 106 items decreased.
