Iraqi Prime Minister al-Ibadi has announced that they are prepared to intervene in case the independence referendum results with violence. In a statement to the press Iraqi Prime Minister Haydar al-Ibadi said that the Iraqi Kurdish Regional Government (IKBY) would perform military intervention in case the Iraqi people are threatened with unlawful use of force.

Haydar al-ibadi called the referendum plan a “dangerous initiative” that would violate Iraq’s sovereignty and added “If you come breach the Constitution and defy the borders of Iraq and the region, this will be an open invitation for the other countries in the region to violate the sovereignty of Iraq as well, leading to an increase of tension in a very dangerous way”.

After the meeting with political parties on June 7th, IKBY President Massoud Barzani had said that the referendum on independence, discussed for a long time, would be held on September 25th, 2017.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haydar al-Ibadi on the other hand had stated that the referendum was against the constitution, and they would not recognize the result.

The Iraqi parliament also rejected the IKBY’s referendum on Tuesday, while local governments in the provinces of Diyala and Salahaddin would not accept a referendum within their territories.
