Kenyan athlete wins 40th Istanbul Marathon organized by Metropolitan Municipality

Istanbul Marathon organized by the Metropolitan Municipality of Istanbul has certainly taken its place among the most prominent events organized in Turkey every year. This year the event was attended by approximately 130 thousand people from 100 countries, with the theme “Run for healthy tomorrows”.

The start of the 42-kilometer marathon was given approximately 250 meters behind the Bosporus Bridge tolls. The 40th Istanbul Marathon was won by the Kenyan athlete Felix Kimutai, who broke the course record. In women, Kenyan Ruth Chepngetich won the marathon with a track record.

The marathon, which started approximately 250 meters behind the bridge tolls, ended at Sultanahmet Square, the meeting and sports center of the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman Empires.

55 elite athletes from Kenya, Ethiopia, Azerbaijan, France, Bahrain, Lithuania, Burundi and Morocco as well as from Turkey competed in the 40th Istanbul Marathon. Chepngetich had completed the Istanbul Marathon first last year as well.

The athletes of the 40th Istanbul Marathon will be awarded US$ 334 thousand 300 dollars. A total of 216 thousand dollars will be awarded in the overall class of the marathon.

Athletes entering the top 8 in men and women will receive 50 thousand, 25 thousand, 15 thousand, 7 thousand, 5 thousand, 3 thousand, 2 thousand and a thousand dollar awards respectively.

Within the scope of the organization, 15 and 10 kilometer races were also held as well as those in the wheelchair category. In said category, a total of 20 thousand dollars will be awarded.
