Location for third Istanbul airport announced by municipality

It is known that the giant city of Istanbul has two airports, namely Atatürk Airport on the European side and Sabiha Gökçen AP on the Asian side.

The huge traffic the megapole has been receiving recently has shown the capacity is not going to be sufficient soon. The government has been long drawing attention to this saying a third airport is on the way.

Withing in this framework, the Metropolitan Municipality of Istanbul made public yesterdat that a tender would be held in 2012 to build the third airport in the northern part of the city.

The mayor said said that the capacity of the airport would be 100 million passengers. He also emphasized that if necessary, fifth and sixth runways could be added later, increasing the passenger capacity to 150 million.

The the new airport is reported be constructed near Terkos Lake in the north of Istanbul.
