EU member states favor dialogue with Ankara for Turkey’s membership

German Chancellor Angela Merkel who held a press conference after the first day of the European Union (EU) Leaders’ Summit held in Brussels, the capital of Belgium stated that EU member states did not want to stop or suspend membership negotiations with Turkey. Merkel expressed they were in favor of a dialogue with Ankara.

Pointing out they had discussed relations with Turkey upon Germany’s demand, Merkel said a majority to support termination of negotiations with Turkey was not in question. On the other hand however, Merkel expressed there was a general feeling of skepticism about the current situation prevailing and she had still explained to the leaders she was in favor of continuing the dialogue with Turkey.

Merkel said concerns had been voiced at the summit also adding a general desire to maintain the bridge with Turkey had been observed.

“We asked the Commission to prepare a proposal on how to cut or redirect support funds before membership. However, the next step should be to establish communication with Turkey.” Merkel also said.
