President Erdoğan to visit Russia in August, Deputy PM says

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is expected to visit Russia on Aug. 9, the first time since the jet-downing crisis between the two countries, said Deputy Prime Minister Mehmet Şimşek on Tuesday. Şimşek was the first high-level official to visit Russia since November’s crisis. He held high-level ministerial meetings in Moscow yesterday together with Economy Minister Nihat Zeybekci.

The presidential visit will be Erdoğan’s first scheduled foreign visit following the failed coup attempt on July 15 by military officers loyal to the U.S.-based fugitive imam Fethullah Gülen in an attempt to unseat President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, leaving at least 208 people dead and 1,491 injured.

Şimşek, who is attending a series of high-level ministerial meetings in Moscow, said that the president will meet with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg.

Turkey’s anger at ‘threatening’ EU over claim accession talks could be halted

Turkey is reacting angrily to what it considers to be tepid support from the EU and US in the aftermath of a failed coup that left hundreds dead and could have plunged the country into a civil war had the plotters achieved a little more success.

Foreign minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said on Monday that the EU should stop making “threatening statements” about blocking Turkey’s accession process. He was responding to European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker’s warning that if Ankara introduced the death penalty the EU would stop the accession process immediately. Mr Juncker added that in any case Turkey was “in no position to become a member any time soon”.

Russian, Turkish officials discuss restoring economic, trade ties

The leading ministers of the Turkish economic administration visited Moscow on July 26 to discuss ways to mend ties with their Russian counterparts for the first time since the downing of a Russian jet by Turkey last November, which strained bilateral relations in a dramatic manner.

Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Mehmet Şimşek and Economy Minister Nihat Zeybekci attended a meeting with Russian Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich at the Government House in Moscow on July 26.

Turkish officials were later scheduled to make separate meetings with leading Russian economy figures.
Russia and Turkey will gradually unfreeze trade and economic relations that soured after Turkey downed a Russian bomber near the Syrian border last November, Dvorkovich told his Turkish counterpart.

DEİK launches urgent action plan after failed coup attempt

Turkey’s Foreign Economic Relations Board (DEİK) has launched a global campaign to boost the country’s economy after the failed coup attempt on July 15, which was blamed by the government on the Fethullahist Terror Organization (FETÖ).

According to a statement by the DEİK, the 11-point urgent action plan’s first phase was launched after discussions with executive and supervisory board members and heads of business councils. The board initially announced a “mobilization” to prevent disinformation abroad and clear information pollution.

In this perspective, a communication committee will be formed within the board to contribute to communication activities inside and outside the country.

Canada demands Turkey explain Calgary man’s detention

Friends and family of an Alberta man accused of taking part in a failed coup say the Turkish government is making a “huge mistake”.

Turkish media reports allege that Calgary’s Davud Hanci is from Pennsylvania and works for exiled moderate cleric Fethullah Gulen. But friend Emre Kahveci tells Global News those reports are simply wrong. “The person in the picture is not even Davud Hanci himself.” Kahveci says. “It’s just a person that quite similarly looks like him.”

Friends and family say Hanci is in reality, an imam for Provincial and Federal corrections services, and was visiting Turkey on a family trip at the time of his arrest. Kahveci says Hanci had nothing to do with the attempted coup.

Turkey: Independent monitors must be allowed to access detainees amid torture allegations

Amnesty International has credible reports that Turkish police in Ankara and Istanbul are holding detainees in stress positions for up to 48 hours, denying them food, water and medical treatment, and verbally abusing and threatening them. In the worst cases some have been subjected to severe beatings and torture, including rape.

“Reports of abuse including beatings and rape in detention are extremely alarming, especially given the scale of detentions that we have seen in the past week. The grim details that we have documented are just a snapshot of the abuses that might be happening in places of detention,” said Amnesty International’s Europe director John Dalhuisen.

The organization is calling for independent monitors to be given immediate access to detainees in all facilities in the wake of the coup attempt, which include police headquarters, sports centres and courthouses. More than 10,000 people have been detained since the failed coup. “It is absolutely imperative that the Turkish authorities halt these abhorrent practices and allow international monitors to visit all these detainees in the places they are being held.”
