Istanbul to host 2017 Muslim Women Summit

Istanbul will host the 2017 Muslim Women Summit, the president of the Turkish Asian Center for Strategic Studies (TASAM) revealed Saturday while attending this year’s gathering in Kuala Lumpur.

Suleyman Sensoy told Anadolu Agency that a declaration on the 2017 summit and the organization’s secretariat moving to Istanbul would be made later during the “Muslim Women: Soft as Silk, Strong as Iron” summit and exhibition in the Malaysian capital.

He described the woman’s initiative as having been developed under the World Islamic Forum’s nearly eight-year “institutionalization process”.

TUSIAD lobbying in Germany to restore confidence

Turkey’s largest business group TUSIAD on Friday sought to assure German businessmen on the political and economic stability in the country following the July 15 coup attempt.

Cansen Basaran-Symes, chairwoman of the influential Turkish Industry and Business Association (TUSIAD), has said the defeated coup attempt led to confusion among German business partners, but their exchanges today in Berlin have offered a better picture of the situation.

“We are closely following the German media coverage and the negative atmosphere regarding Turkey since the July 15 coup attempt. Our aim with this visit has been to correct the wrong perceptions, by clearly telling what has really happened in Turkey. We have had very fruitful meetings,” she told a press conference.

While many European capitals condemned the coup attempt, the media focus quickly shifted to concerns over investigations into the incidents, and the political orientation of Turkey, as large number of suspects were arrested or suspended in state institutions.

Turkey, US in deadlock over two major issues

Turkey and the United States have become ensconced in a deadlock over two major issues, Turkey’s demand for the extradition of U.S.-based Islamic preacher Fethullah Gülen, whom the government accuses of staging the failed July 15 coup, and the approach to Syrian Kurdish fighters.

Criticizing the U.S. for not extraditing Gülen to Turkey despite evidence allegedly proving his role in the coup attempt that killed more than 250 people, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said they had previously extradited terrorists the U.S. had wanted from Turkey.

“The U.S. said ‘catch 10 terrorists and send them [to us],’ and we caught nine of them and handed them [to the U.S.]. It’s the same thing. We want the head of such an [terrorist] organization. We are strategic partners; we are together in NATO but they say that the court needs to reach a decision. We cannot wait. [The crime] has been committed in [our country]; let us make the decision,” Erdoğan told Bloomberg News’ John Micklethwait in an interview in New York that aired on Sept. 22.

Turkish growth target may be revised down after failed coup, says deputy PM

Turkey’s official growth target of 4.5 percent this year could be revised downward in the medium-term economic program, mainly due to security concerns and the failed coup attempt of July 15, Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Mehmet Şimşek has said.

He also noted that the forecast for the current account gap could be increased.

“We will probably see the revisions in the targets which were defined in the medium-term economic program … After we made the program; we saw that global developments did not go in line with our prior expectations. A coup was attempted in Turkey. We have also seen the rise in regional problems and terror attacks,” he said Sept. 22 in a televised interview on NTV.

Turkey’s car production plans advancing, targets 1.5 mln vehicle output: Minister

Turkey is making good progress on plans to produce a new domestic car model, Industry Minister Faruk Özlü said on Sept. 23, adding that the government was targeting annual output of 1.5 million vehicles for the entire sector this year.

The automotive industry in Turkey saw production rising by 16 percent to a record 1.359 million vehicles last year, but these vehicles are made by foreign companies, some in joint ventures with Turkish companies.

“We want a global auto brand, not a domestic car,” Özlü told journalists in Ankara, as quoted by Reuters.
