The foundation of Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant was laid with ceremony attended by President Erdogan and Russian President Putin, yesterday. The construction of Turkey’s first nuclear power plant in Mersin was started by Erdoğan and Putin. The groundbreaking ceremony was held in Ankara and Mersin simultaneously. President Erdogan and Russian President Vladimir Putin attended the ceremony at the presidential palace in Ankara. After speeches, the construction was started upon instructions given to Russian and Turkish technical teams. It is reported that the construction of this plant will provided an added value of between USD 6-8 billion to Turkey.

Based on the intergovernmental agreement between Russia and Turkey the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) will be made by Russian Rosatom company and is specified as “Strategic Investment”.

The plant is expected to be completed with an investment of USD 20-22 billion. For this reason, this project will be the largest investment Turkey has ever realized. Akkuyu NGS has been planned with 4 reactors and a total installed capacity of 4800 MW.
