Secretary General Stoltenberg says Nato is in solidarity with Turkey

At a time when the USA and its Nato ally Turkey are in a major conflict regarding several vital issues such as the situation north of the Euphrates and the YPG as well as the purchase of S400 missiles from Russia, NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg has made important statements to extend his support to Turkey. Speaking in an interview NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg is reported to have said “In this period of tough security issues NATO allies are in solidarity with Turkey”.

Stoltenberg expressed that he was pleased Turkey would host a special meeting of the North Atlantic Council, on the occasion of 25th anniversary Mediterranean Dialogue and shared his opinions regarding Patriot and S-400 air defense systems, Turkey-US relations, the contribution of Turkey to NATO and the future of the alliance.

The secretary said, “This year, we are celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Mediterranean Dialogue, which strengthens a common understanding and cooperation as NATO’s unique network of partners to include 7 members. Turkey is an important and valuable NATO ally and I am very pleased to visit Turkey again.

Alongside this meeting I will also get together with Turkey’s President ERDOGAN and Foreign Minister CAVUSOGLU with whom I am in regular contact with. I am pleased that I will have the opportunity to discuss in person the security situation in the region and the contribution Turkey provides to NATO on this occasion”.

The secretary also said his message to the Turkish people was that NATO was in solidarity in this tough period of security issues and Turkey continued to provide important contributions to NATO as well.

In regards to the S400 issue which is one of the main conflicts between the USA and Turkey, the secretary clearly implied that NATO would prefer Turkey to go ahead with PATRIOT missiles – judging on his below comment:

“This is a difficult issue, it is important to continue the dialogue between Turkey and the United States. Decisions on the supply of weapons are the national decisions that countries must take. I welcome and encourage Turkey’s negotiations with the United States regarding the eventual purchase of the Patriot missile systems. This process is both important for NATO as it involves the participation of some key allies, and to ensure that Allies purchase equipment to enable them to work together”.
