Turkey is definitely determined to accomplish its “Domestic Automobile” Project. Time will show how this will effect the composition of car sales among many brands in the country. However, President Erdoğan has referred to this issue many times in the past and eventually managed to bring together some top business people in the country to get involved in the project.

Within this scope, Mr. OZLU, Turkey’s Minister of Industry & Technology has shared that signing ceremony of the company contract to realize “Turkey’s Automobile Project” will be held on 11 May 2018 with the participation of President Erdoğan who will also announce the name of the general manager of the establishment.

In his speech Mr. OZLU, also reminded that Turkey’s Car Project which was carried out under the coordination of the ministry, was a technology project. He went on to say “Turkey’s Automobile Project is going well. We will do the signing of business contracts in the Presidential Complex on 11 May 2018. The President will announce the CEO on that occasion, as well”

In regards to plans for improvement of technology in the country the Minister shared following information: “We are opening “Research & Development” within the structure of the private sector in Turkey. The number of such centers has exceeded one thousand. We provide support by paying a certain portion of the salaries for these personnel to work at these centers. We are creating an infrastructure that will enable our industry to produce its own technology. TUBITAK (Turkey’s Science Research Establishment) will announce a scholarship program nowadays and this will mainly be based on industrial doctorate.”

The Minister emphasized the great importance of young people for Turkey and said “We have very high expectations from your generation”.

OUR EVALUATION:  Penetrating the global car market is not only a matter of production and it requires a very costly establishment process and immense marketing efforts to compete with giants dominating the global markets. Thus, Turkey has decided to take on a major challenge which may not end up with a success story. As for South Korean miracle regarding the success with Hyundai, it would be adeuate to remind it did not happen overnight and there were other factors to bring success. Time will certainly show if the effort spent by Turkey will pay off.
