Syria resolution accepted at Turkish Grand National Assembly

The Syria resolution has been accepted at the Turkish Grand National Assembly by 320 votes against 129.

The closed session, to debate and vote the motion on cross-border operations held by the Turkish Grand National Assembly, lasted three hours.

Deputies of the ruling AK Party and opposition National Movement Party (MHP) voted for the motion, while Republican People’s Party (CHP) and BDP members said “No”.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said in a statement he made following the vote at the parliament, “Turkey’s message has been received”.

Since the motion was approved at a closed session, official written records of the debate on granting the government with the authority to carry out military operation outside national borders, can not be made public for ten years.

The resolution to be valid for one year says that the unfavourable impact of the ongoing crisis in Syria is increasingly causing harm to regional security and stability as it is to our natuonal security.

It says further that attacks have been launched against Turkey within the framework of the military operations in Syria since September 20 and the attacks have contenued despite warnings and diplomatic initiatives.

The situation, the resolution says, has reached a stage where Turkey stands to suffer serious threats and risks and the need has arisen to take timely and swift action and implement measures against additional risks and threats which may target our country.

It has demanded parliamentary authorization for one year for the governmnet to deploy Turkish troops in foreign countries if necessary.
