Turkey: Bidders compete in sell out for Ankara gas network

Ankara is the capital of Turkey with a population of around 4 million people. It is a very modern and fast developing town receiving substantial immigration from other less developed regions. The name of the natural gas company – owned by Metropolitan municipality is BASKENT GAZ.

It is reported that six investors have submitted official bids in a tender to sell 100 percent of stakes in Turkish capital’s natural gas grid, BaskentGas which has nearly 1.4 million subscribers with more than 70 new subscriptions annually, and a sales volume of over 2.3 billion cubic meters a year.

It is also reported that eighty percent of the BaskentGas stakes is state-controlled while 20 percent is owned by the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality.

Eksim Yatirim Holding AS–GENPA Telekomunikasyon ve Iletisim Hizmetleri Sanayi ve Ticaret were among bidding companies included in the third tender.

Earlier, two tenders had taken place in 2008 and 2010 and they had seen saw offers as high as $1.61 billion in 2008 and $1.21 billion respectively.

Two former tenders for the privatization of the gas grid have seen offers as high as $1.61 billion in 2008 and $1.21 billion in 2010. However, the tenders had not been concluded because the winners had not fulfilled.
