"Share this post on social media, spread the news"

turkish_carpetThe Turkish carpets, which attracted world’s attention hundreds of years ago, have become a global brand for hand-woven carpets.

Sixty-five percent of the carpets produced in Turkey are exported to the external markets.

Turkey is one of the main hubs, alongside with Iran and other Asian countries, in carpet production and trade for centuries.

The “eastern carpets”, in which the carpets manufactured in Turkey is included, has become one of the major trade products of the world.

Starting from the 18th century, the international traders did not confine themselves with the trade of carpets supplied to market and started to have the manufacturers to produce carpets on order.

Although carpet and rug knitting were being made in every region of  Turkey through the 19th century, cities like Kayseri, Uşak, Hereke, Konya, Bursa and Manisa became prominent.

In the second half of the 19th century, machine-made carpet production started but the larger part of the manufacturing still was hand-woven until 1930s.

After this date, machine made carpet era has started with the establishment of carpet factories with large capacities.

More than 50 percent of the production continued to come from small workshops.

Rapid rise of urbanization and housing constructions in 1970s has increased the production of carpets which are used for floor covering.

The machine-carpet industry has discovered the export markets in 1980s and started to make production in line with the external demand in 1990s.

It significantly increased its production and export capacity in 2000s with the establishment of overseas factories.

The main markets for the sector are the US and the European countries. The companies in the sector attribute great importance to R&D works, quality and promotion.

Removal of visa requirement with Saudi Arabia and Europe is expected to have a great impact on the development of the sector.

The major target is to produce more and to take root in new markets. In this framework, our efforts to search new markets are underway.

The sector is planning to increase exports by 80 percent in the coming five years from its current level to USD 1 billion.
