Turkey targets to increase its aluminum exports to US$ 8 billion by 2023

Turkey is determined to realize USD 500 billion worth of exports by 2023, the centenary of the establishment of the Republic of Turkey by ATATÜRK and his colleagues in 1923.  Sectors in the industry have also set specific export targets to be fulfilled by the same date.

Turkey’s aluminum sector for instance which offers a wide range of products to be used in sectors such as automotive, white goods, vehicles, construction etc. has plans to increase its export figure to USD 8 billion by 2023. Considering the fact the sector managed to export USD 2.3 billion worth of goods in 2015, it obviously faces a tough challenge to reach said target.

Aluminum referred to as “the metal of the future has been getting more widespread each and every day with usage shares of 25 percent in construction, 24 percent in transportation, 15 percent in packaging, 10 percent in electricity and electronics, 9 percent in general engineering, 6 percent in furniture and office equipment, 3 percent in iron and steel and metallurgical industries and 1 percent in the chemical and agricultural products industries. The consumption of aluminum in other areas is around 7 percent.

Experts also point that features such as heat conductivity, corrosion resistance, recyclability, environmentalism, easy shaping and aesthetic properties of aluminum contribute to the growing demand for said metal across the globe.

Development of aluminum sector in Turkey

Turkey’s aluminum industry which has displayed a considerable performance in parallel to the development of the sector globally has a significant importance for Turkey’s economy with a market size of USD 4 billion. The sector has approximately 1500 companies which create employment for 30,000 people. It continues to grow with investments in R & D and technology renewal, increasing its exports to European, Asian and African countries with high-quality finished and semi-finished products.

Turkish aluminum sector which exports to 180 countries realized an export sales figure of USD 2,467,485,560 with 680.727 tons in 2017 as compared to USD 2,212,812,530 with 666,745 tons in 2016.

The main export markets of the sector are the European Union countries such as Germany, Italy and England and Iraq, Turkmenistan and Egypt. The sector has defined following countries as target markets; The USA, Mexico, Canada, Chile, Peru, East Africa and Qatar with a target figure of USD 8 billion by the end of 2023.
