Turkey’s main opposition calls on Supreme Election Board to repeal referendum

Turkey’s main opposition party has called on the Supreme Election Board to repeal the referendum, also vowing to take irregularities during the April 16 referendum to the Constitutional Court and European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).

Bülent TEZCAN, Republican People’s Party (CHP) deputy leader commented at a press conference right after the referendum “The only way to end the ongoing debate on the legitimacy of the referendum is to annul it”.

TEZCAN said that CHP (main opposition) were working to prepare necessary files to make their application to the Supreme Election Board (YSK) which had agreed to accept unsealed ballot papers as valid in the middle of the election and they would require annulment of the referendum. TEZCAN added they would also take the issue to the Constitutional Court and the ECHR if need be.

by stating that they would apply to the Constitutional Court and ECHR, if necessary, to YSK, who accepts their votes to accept sealed ballot papers valid until the due date.

The deputy leader also showed journalists some video footage as evidence of referred fraud in referendum. The footage showed that the ballot boxes were open and the election officials were stamping ballots after counting had started.

TEZCAN also stated that the referendum would have a disgraceful mark in history due to open voting but secret counting. Because the YSK was not able to conduct a safe and reliable election operation this referendum will always be recalled as illegitimate adding the YSK had deemed unsealed ballot papers as valid even though the Election Law prohibited such practice
