Turkey’s President Erdogan’s visit to Greece starts in tense atmosphere

It is reported in the press that “The first official visit of a Turkish president to Athens after 65 years” has begun in an unfriendly (if not hostile) manner. The reports emphasize that Turkey’s leader has adopted a rather harsh discourse at the beginning of his visit to Greece.

Erdoğan, as reported by the press expressed that “the religious freedoms set in the Treaty of Lausanne signed in 1923” should be improved, within one hour only after he had set foot in Athens. Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos in return, replied by saying “Lausanne was not open to negotiations”.

On the other hand, extraordinary measures are taken in Athens due to Erdogan’s visit. It is considered to be one of the greatest security operations in recent history, where 2,800 policemen, snipers and commandos are deployed across the capital with smuggling dogs and bomb disposal teams all around the place to the extent of bringing life to an almost halt point in Athens.

Speaking of Lausanne while Pavlopoulos welcomed Erdogan, paved the way to an unexpected battle of words (so to say) between the two presidents. While Erdogan argued that the Treaty of Lausanne should be updated, Pavlopoulos argued that the treaty was “not open to negotiation”.
