Turkey’s unemployment figure for 2018 was calculated at 11 percent

There is no doubt that Turkey has been going through a tough year in terms of economy since 2018. Fluctuations in Turkish lira as well as skyrocketing inflation have been major issues to worry the administration. On top of these all unemployment figures have turned up to be issues to cause serious concern for the government.

Based on official data unemployment became 11 percent in Turkey, in 2018. The share of services and industry in employed persons increased by 0.8 and 0.6 points, respectively; the share of agriculture and construction decreased by 1 and 0.5 points, respectively.

The number of unemployed in 2018 increased by 83 thousand persons compared to the previous year and became 3 million 537 thousand. Unemployment rate increased to 11 percent corresponding to an increase of 0.1 point.

Non-agricultural unemployment was estimated at 12.9 percent, down 0.1 points from a year earlier.

The youth unemployment rate including 15-24 age group was 20.3 percent with a decline of 0.5 point and this rate was  became 11.2 percent in 15-64 age group.

In 2018, the number of employed persons increased by 549 thousand persons compared to the previous year, reaching 28 million 738 thousand people, while employment increased by 0.3 percentage points to 47.4 percent.

In 2018, the number of employees in the agricultural sector decreased by 167 thousand, while the number of employees in non-agricultural sectors increased by 717 thousand.

18.4 percent of those employed were in agriculture, 19.7 percent in industry, 6.9 percent in construction, 54.9 percent in the services sector.
