Committee Approves İmralı Visit
Turkey’s long-standing debate over whether a delegation should visit İmralı island was resolved today with a historic parliamentary session. The National Solidarity, Brotherhood, and Democracy Committee voted in a closed session in favor of sending a delegation. The CHP did not attend the session, while the Democratic Party (Dem) withdrew entirely from the committee.
Tension Breaks as the Decision is Made
After weeks of discussions, the committee convened under Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş, who stated that the next steps would be discussed more clearly and requested the session be closed. During the open session, party representatives spoke, with all but the AK Party representatives sharing their positions on the İmralı visit.
CHP: “We Support the Process, But Not the Delegation”
The CHP clearly announced that it would not join the İmralı delegation. CHP Deputy Group Leader Murat Emir emphasized the party’s continued support for the process:
“We will of course support a vision of a Turkey without terrorism. Our party will bring true peace and security to the country. However, we will not participate in the delegation to İmralı. We will continue participating in the committee’s work.”
What is This Visit All About?
To understand the context: Turkey’s National Solidarity, Brotherhood, and Democracy Committee has been working on measures to achieve a “terror-free Turkey” and to create a dialogue platform among political parties. Recently, the question of whether a delegation should visit İmralı Island, where PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan has been held in prison for a long while, became highly controversial.
After weeks of party discussions, the historic vote today approved the delegation’s visit. CHP chose not to participate, while the Democratic Party withdrew from the committee.
Editor’s Note: Strategic Aims Behind the Visit
Abdullah Öcalan, founder and leader of the PKK, is responsible for armed attacks that killed tens of thousands in Turkey and has been held in İmralı Prison since 1999. The 2024 process initiated by Bahçeli (partner of the government in practice) is presented to the public as a solution to the Kurdish issue. The Dem Party (pro-Kurdish) on the other hand promotes the “İmralı delegation initiative” as a step to advance the peace process and emphasizes that the state (parliament) should directly engage with Öcalan.
However, the committee’s actual objectives are said to measure Öcalan’s influence over the organization, analyze the situation before any cross-border operations (in case need be etc), and maintain the process under state control.
To be equally (and even more important) The visit also serves to elevate Öcalan as the symbolic architect of the process, giving him visibility in Turkey and internationally – as deemed by the pro-Kurdish DEM Party.
