Report reveals what employees have lost in Turkey country since switch to presidential system in 2018

The latest report of DISK-AR revealed what employees had lost in the country since 2018, when Turkey switched to the presidential system. Rising inflation and the dollar exchange rate over the past 4 years have impoverished the worker.

The Research Center of the Confederation of Revolutionary Labor Unions of Turkey (Dec-AR) has prepared a report revealing how the situation of employees has changed since Turkey switched to the presidential regime with the election held on June 24, 2018.

DISK-AR’s ’Four-year balance sheet of the presidential regime’ report revealed the large increase in inflation during the presidential system and how the minimum wage has decelerated. According to the report, inflation in the presidential regime increased from 15 percent to 74 percent, while 1 dollar rose from 4.8 TL to 17.4 TL.

In addition, between 2018 and 2022, the minimum wage Decelerated by $ 92 in foreign currency. During the presidential term, the wide-defined unemployment rate increased by 5.4 percentage points and the number of wide-defined unemployed by 2.6 million.

THE WORKER IS IMPOVERISHED

According to the report, the minimum wage has seriously declined in foreign currency due to rising exchange rates. The minimum wage which was 1603.1 TL in 2018, was set at 4,253.4 TL in 2022. Although the minimum wage appears to have increased by 156.3 percent in the four intervening years, the minimum wage has decreased against the euro and the dollar. The minimum wage decreased from $336.8 in June 2018 to $245 in 2022.

In addition, before the presidential regime, in June 2022, the CPI (inflation) was 15.39 percent per annum and food inflation was 18.89 percent. After the prices that started to increase after the election, the economic crisis and the currency crisis that started at the end of 2021, the CPI was announced as 73.5 percent per annum and food inflation as 91.63 percent in May 2022.

On the other hand, in the presidential regime, the ratio of the minimum wage to national income per capita declined. The ratio of the minimum wage to gross domestic product per capita has gradually fallen. In 2017, the minimum wage, which was 53 percent of GDP per Capita, was estimated to have decreased to 37 percent as of June 2022.
