Adverse weather conditions in the UK are reported to have negatively impacted domestic travel, leading to an increase in the number of people wanting to travel abroad for their summer holidays.
According to a survey conducted by the UK-based international bank Barclays with 2,000 people, one-third of the population prioritize going abroad for their summer holidays due to unfavorable weather conditions in the country. 39% of those surveyed stated that they seeked to escape rainy and cold weather to enjoy sunny days.
HOTELS AND OTHER ACCOMMODATION CENTERS EXPERIENCE DECLINE
The report, prepared based on card spending data from Barclays customers in April, noted a 7.1% increase in the tourism sector, marking another positive month. However, the same report highlighted that hotels, resorts, and other accommodation centers experienced a decline for the first time since May 2023, with a decrease rate of 0.7%.
TRAVEL EXPENSES AT TRAVEL AGENCIES INCREASE BY 14.4 % IN APRIL
Barclays’ report also stated that travel expenses at travel agencies increased by 14.4% in April, with 32% of respondents prioritizing spending their holidays abroad rather than in their own country.
According to the report, British spending on air travel increased by 6.2% in April, while transactions increased by 9.7%. However, it was emphasized that this increase followed a 9.7% decrease in March.
CARD SPENDINGS SLOW DOWN TO 1.6 PERCENT IN APRIL
The report stated, “The rate of increase in customers’ card spending, which was 1.9% in March, slowed down slightly to 1.6% in April. Household financial confidence reached its highest level in three years, while the slowdown in food inflation brought price decreases in restaurants and the smallest increase in supermarket spending since June 2022.”
