Istanbul Braces for Sharp Cold Wave: Snow Expected from Sunday Night
The Disaster Coordination Center (AKOM) has released its latest weather forecast for Istanbul and the Marmara Region, warning that the area will continue to be affected by successive low-pressure systems moving in from the Central Mediterranean.
Snowfall to Begin on Sunday Night
Following storms and heavy rain, a cold air mass arriving from the Balkans is expected to reach the region starting from Sunday noon. With this system, temperatures are forecast to drop suddenly by 8 to 10 degrees, returning to true winter conditions. From Sunday night onward, snowfall is expected to become effective across Istanbul.
According to AKOM, temperatures will range between minus 1 and 4 degrees Celsius until Wednesday morning. From Sunday evening, rain mixed with snow is likely, while higher elevations will see snowfall. From the early hours of Monday, around 5 a.m., snow may fall heavily in some areas.
Warnings for Storms, Flooding, and Icing
Strong winds expected from Saturday evening may cause disruptions such as fallen trees and utility poles, roof and sign damage, carbon monoxide poisoning from chimneys, and interruptions to road, sea, and air transportation. AKOM also warns that intense rainfall may lead to local flooding, water accumulation on roads, and coastal overflow. Residents are urged to take precautions against snowfall and icing, particularly from Sunday night onward.
“Work from Home If Possible” Advisory
Istanbul Technical University faculty member and disaster management expert Prof. Dr. Mikdat Kadıoğlu has drawn attention to Monday, advising people not to make plans for that day. He stated that the combination of temperature and precipitation will be ideal for snowfall in Istanbul, while conditions for Tuesday remain uncertain. Kadıoğlu recommended making use of technology and considering working from home if possible.
