Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya has announced a new penalty system aimed at strengthening road safety across Turkey. His statements revealed that the government will no longer tolerate common violations such as speeding, running red lights, and using a phone while driving. This new era in traffic enforcement demands both discipline and attention from all drivers.
Overspeeding Could Now Cost You Your License
Minister Yerlikaya emphasized that one of the main causes of accidents is speeding and shared details of the new system. Separate speed limits will now apply for urban and rural areas. Sensitive zones such as schools and hospitals will be under stricter surveillance, and exceeding the 30 km limit there will result in serious penalties. Drivers caught going 76 km will lose their license for 30 days, those going 86 km for 60 days, and 96 km for 90 days. Additionally, drivers who violate speed limits five times within a year will be referred to a psychiatric evaluation.
Zero Tolerance for Red Lights and Emergency Vehicle Violations
The new regulation also imposes severe sanctions on those who fail to yield to emergency vehicles. Drivers who block ambulances or fire trucks twice within five years will have their licenses permanently revoked. Red light violations will now be punished progressively. A driver who runs a red light three times in one year will lose their license for 30 days, four times for 60 days, and five times for 90 days. A sixth violation will result in permanent license cancellation.
Heavy Penalties for Using Phones While Driving
Tough measures are also being introduced for drivers caught using mobile phones behind the wheel. The first violation will result in a 5,000 TL fine, the second in 10,000 TL, and a third violation will lead to a 30-day license suspension. Those who ignore a police “stop” command will face a 60-day traffic ban and a hefty 200,000 TL fine.
The Goal: Safer Roads, More Responsible Drivers
The Interior Ministry plans to intensify traffic inspections in urban areas under this new framework. Yerlikaya highlighted that the main goal is not punishment but encouraging drivers to follow the rules and protect lives. However, the message is clear: those who continue to ignore the rules will face strict and uncompromising consequences.
