Venezuela Cancels THY’s Operating Permit
Venezuela has officially revoked the operating licenses of Turkish Hava Yolları (THY) and five other airlines after the carriers suspended their flights due to rising tensions between Caracas and Washington. THY recently announced a temporary suspension of its Istanbul–Caracas route between November 24–28.
According to a Reuters report, the Venezuelan civil aviation authority cancelled the permits of Turkish Airlines, Iberia, TAP, Avianca, Latam Colombia and Gol. The government accused these airlines of halting flights “unilaterally” and claimed they were “participating in U.S.-supported state terrorism.”
Some airlines stopped their flights after the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration issued a safety alert for Venezuelan airspace. In response, Venezuela gave carriers 48 hours to resume flights.
Iberia stated that it would restart operations once safety is ensured. Air Europa and Plus Ultra, which also suspended flights, have not had their permits revoked—at least for now.
Rising Tension in the Region
The U.S. has accused the Venezuelan government of participating in illegal drug trafficking and has deployed troops to the Caribbean in recent months. President Nicolás Maduro denies the allegations and claims President Donald Trump is attempting to overthrow him.
Venezuela’s Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino López sharply criticized the U.S., calling it “one of the greatest and most destructive empires in human history.”
THY Had Already Suspended Flights
As diplomatic friction intensified, Washington took a new step against Venezuela. The FAA issued a NOTAM covering the entire Maiquetia Flight Information Region, warning against operations in Venezuelan airspace.
Following this notice, Turkish Airlines temporarily suspended its Istanbul–Caracas flights between November 24–28.
