Cappadocia Environmental Platform spokesperson said that fairy chimneys which had formed over millions of years in Cappadocia and found a place on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) list, were destroyed due to road construction.
According to the news published in Evrensel, the construction of a new road between Göreme and Ortahisar, which was started about 6 weeks ago by the teams affiliated to the Nevşehir Special Provincial Administration Road and Transportation Services, passed through the middle of Cappadocia.
Cappadocia Environmental Platform spokesperson said that the road route was also in the 1st Degree Archaeological and Natural Site area. He stated that this area, including the Hidden Church, was both a natural site and an archaeological site. He noted following as well: “They are cutting through the underlying rocks and destroy a Byzantine monastery, to make a road here.”

The spokesperson, who stated that the reason for the construction of the road was shown that the Tokali Church near the Göreme Museum was damaged by the vibration caused by the vehicles passing by nearby, said: “They want to close this road and make a new road as an alternative. There are fairy chimneys, monasteries, incredible formations on the road route under construction. The road passes almost over the Hidden Church. This is where they are carving a 45-meter mountain mass from top to bottom to level the ramp. They’re going to open up an incredible rift around here. There will not be a fairy chimney, a monastery left in that region that has not been broken, that has not been destroyed. In the future, for the same reason, it will cause serious damage due to the shaking of vehicles. There is an incredible massacre and no one’s voice is heard.”
