Saxony-Anhalt’s state premier, Reiner Haseloff, stated that many of the injured are in critical condition. German media reports indicate that 41 of the injured are in serious condition. Despite initial findings suggesting the attacker acted alone, authorities are investigating all possible motives.
The attacker has been identified as 50-year-old Taleb A., a Saudi Arabian national who arrived in Germany in 2006 and works as a doctor. Authorities revealed that while the attacker had posted anti-Islamic content online, there was no indication of any radical connections.
Emergency Response and Aftermath
Over 100 police officers, healthcare workers, and firefighters were deployed to the scene immediately after the attack. The mayor of Magdeburg expressed that the tragedy deeply disturbed the peace of the city. Images from the scene showed injured individuals lying on the ground while emergency teams continued rescue operations.
Following the attack, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz visited Magdeburg to assess the situation. He described the attack as “a terrible tragedy,” adding, “It is unacceptable that so many people were brutally killed in such a joyful setting.”
A woman named Nadine, who was at the market during the attack, shared that the vehicle hit her partner, Marco, knocking him away from her. “Everything was horrifying,” she said, struggling to describe the shock she experienced.
The Attacker’s Background
Reports indicate that the attacker was granted refugee status in Germany in 2016 and had been working as a psychiatrist in Bernburg. The attack has reignited debates over security measures and immigration policies in Germany, with comparisons being drawn to a similar attack in 2016 at a Christmas market in Berlin, which left 12 dead and 49 injured.
In Magdeburg, a memorial service was held at the Cathedral for the victims, attended by hundreds of people. The city’s football team also held a special ceremony to remember the victims. The public is now calling for swift and effective measures to prevent such a tragedy from happening again.
