Concerns Growing in the Region: Is Turkey Preparing for a New Operation in Syria?

TSK Convoys in Northern Syria Spark Fresh Speculation

Footage showing Turkish Armed Forces armored convoys moving in northern Syria last night stirred new claims about a potential cross-border operation. According to reports, the vehicles entered from Afrin, Ras al-Ayn, and Aleppo, then advanced toward Manbij — a line long known for being politically and militarily sensitive.

Parallel Military Buildup in Deir ez-Zor

Meanwhile, forces affiliated with the Syrian government were seen deploying reinforcements to the Deir ez-Zor region. Cameras captured units equipped with weapons and systems reportedly procured from Turkey, moving alongside Syrian army soldiers — an unusual sight that added another layer of complexity to the situation.

In response, the SDF also stationed forces in Deir ez-Zor and shared photos of armed militants positioned in the area, signaling a readiness for potential confrontation.

MSB Responds to Rumors

The tension has been rising ever since the SDF, which is tied to the YPG, failed to integrate into the Syrian government forces despite a signed agreement on March 10. This delay revived claims that Turkey might be preparing for a military move targeting the group.

The speculation intensified further after Chief of General Staff Gen. Selçuk Bayraktaroğlu visited Syria on December 5–6 — a rare and notable development in itself.

Amid the growing chatter, sources from the Ministry of Defense told Cumhuriyet that the circulating claims do not reflect any extraordinary activity, stating: “These are routine operations, nothing beyond that.”

Does The Current Situation in Northern Syria Pose a Security Threat to Turkey?

From Ankara’s perspective, areas controlled by the YPG/SDG have long been considered a serious security concern. Turkey views the YPG as an extension of the PKK and argues that any consolidation of the group along its border increases the risk of cross-border attacks, infiltration attempts, and the establishment of a hostile corridor stretching through northern Syria.

Furthermore, Turkey is concerned about having to deal with eventual/likely initiatives to come from YPG (Kurdish group in Syria) to establish a Kurdish state in the region and demand territory from Turkey in the future; That is territory covering some populated cities such as Diyarbakır and alike in the region with a majority of Kurdish population.

This is why, when tensions rise or when the SDF appears to gain ground with foreign or regime support, Ankara may see a military operation as a necessary step to:

• prevent the formation of a continuous YPG-controlled zone
• maintain border security
• control strategic routes around Manbij and Deir ez-Zor
• re-balance the field before new political negotiations

So while the Ministry of Defense says “nothing unusual” is happening, the military buildup on multiple sides and the fragile dynamics in the region explain why the possibility of an operation remains a recurring topic.
