Turkey’s Defense Minister, Yaşar Güler, delivered crucial remarks about the “normalization” process between Turkey and Syria, suggesting that meetings involving ministers could take place at mutually agreed locations.
In an interview with the British news agency Reuters, Minister Güler provided significant insights into Turkey’s ongoing discussions with Syria. He stated, “In Syria, as was the case previously in Moscow, meetings involving delegations with ministers could be held at locations agreed upon by both sides.”
Regarding the Syrian government’s demand for the withdrawal of the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) from Syria, Minister Güler clarified, “Turkey can only consider coordinating its withdrawal from Syria after a new constitution has been adopted, elections have been held, and borders have been secured.”
‘NATO is Our Priority’
Minister Güler also emphasized Turkey’s desire to strengthen its relations with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) but reiterated that the country’s priority remains fulfilling its responsibilities within NATO. He stated, “Our priority is to meet our obligations as a significant ally in NATO and to strengthen solidarity with our allies. Our focus is to ensure that NATO remains prepared, resolute, and strong.”
F-16 Agreement Continues
Güler expressed satisfaction with the ongoing agreement between Turkey and the United States for the procurement of Block-70 F-16 fighter jets and modernization kits, noting that the process was proceeding as planned. “We hope the project will be completed smoothly until the last aircraft is delivered,” Güler said, adding that officials from both NATO allies continued to discuss the details of the agreement.
