Earth scientist Prof. Dr. Naci Görür shared his initial assessment of the 4.0-magnitude earthquake that occurred in Istanbul’s Silivri district. Prof. Dr. Görür stated that the quake had occurred on the Kumburgaz Fault Zone, emphasizing, “The location is significant. We need to be cautious. The Kumburgaz Fault is under stress.”
According to the information from the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) website, following the 3.9-magnitude earthquake at 12:19 PM, seven more tremors were recorded. The smallest of these tremors was a magnitude 3.4 off the coast of Büyükçekmece, and the largest was a 6.2-magnitude quake again off the coast of Silivri.
Prof. Dr. Naci Görür made the following remarks on social media after the 6.2-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Silivri in the Marmara Sea:
- There are many earthquakes of varying magnitudes happening on the Kumburgaz Fault in the Marmara Sea near Istanbul.
- These are not the major earthquake we expect in the Marmara region. These quakes are increasing the stress on the fault. In other words, they’re pushing it toward rupture. The real quake expected here will be larger than magnitude 7.
- Earthquakes are too important to only be discussed after they happen. We need to talk and take action before they occur.
- The government, municipalities, and citizens must work together to prepare the city for an earthquake. Urban transformation and building new structures is not the same as earthquake readiness. Creating an earthquake-resilient city is something completely different.
- It’s now up to the people to take action — their role is oversight and pressure for accountability.
- Around 12:00, a 4.0 earthquake occurred off the coast of Silivri. It took place in the Kumburgaz Fault Zone. This fault is locked and accumulating energy. It occasionally releases small tremors. The location is meaningful, and we must be alert. The Kumburgaz Fault is under increasing strain.
- This isn’t a “happened and it’s over” kind of earthquake. Once again, Turkey is reminded of an issue that should never leave our national agenda. The major earthquake is coming. I warn the authorities about Istanbul once more — we have no time to lose.
