It has been reported that approximately 50 thousand houses were either completely or partially destroyed in the 7-magnitude earthquake that occurred in Morocco. According to a written statement from the Royal Court of Morocco, a special meeting chaired by King Mohammed VI was held to activate an emergency program to meet the housing needs of earthquake victims and deliver the necessary aid.
The statement indicated that about 50 thousand houses had completely or partially collapsed in five regions affected by the earthquake. It was also mentioned that the government would provide emergency assistance worth 30,000 dirhams (approximately 3,000 dollars) to families affected by the earthquake.
The statement further mentioned that “a direct financial assistance of 140,000 dirhams (approximately 14,000 dollars) will be provided for completely collapsed houses, and 80,000 dirhams (approximately 8,000 dollars) for partially collapsed houses,” without specifying the exact number of houses that were completely or partially destroyed.
On September 8th, a 7-magnitude earthquake with its epicenter in the El-Huz region, near the city of Marrakech, had occurred in Morocco at 23:10 local time.
The earthquake affected not only Marrakech but also the capital Rabat, as well as Casablanca, Meknes, Agadir, and Fes cities.
The Moroccan Ministry of Interior announced that, according to the latest data, the earthquake had resulted in 2,946 casualties and 5,674 injuries.
