The earthquake storm and volcanic activity on Greece’s Santorini Island continue. Experts are drawing attention to the movement of the volcanic caldera area in the region.
The earthquake storm in Santorini, a famous island in Greece, is still ongoing. Recently, numerous earthquakes with magnitudes above 4 and 5 have occurred, and volcanic activity persists.
Experts are particularly highlighting the movement of the volcanic caldera, an area of concern in the region.
Since August 2024, it has been observed that the volcanic seabed has risen by 4 centimeters, and the caldera has shifted 6 centimeters to the east.
Experts Advise Caution
Thanasis Ganas, the Research Director of the Greek Geodynamic Institute, stated that this movement had been observed before, during 2011-2012, but no eruption occurred at that time. However, experts emphasize that these changes should be closely monitored
Ganas said, “For now, I can’t say it’s alarming because we saw the same thing in 2011-2012, and there was no eruption afterward. But this is a significant change, and we need to monitor it.”
Over 1,000 Earthquakes
Additionally, measures on the affected islands due to seismic activity have been extended. Since February 1st, over 1,100 earthquakes have been recorded near Santorini.
