Istanbul Airport became the busiest airport in Europe last year with an average of 1375 daily flights. Additionally, on June 22, 2023, Istanbul Airport set a new airport network record with 1684 flights. Last year, the average daily flight count in Turkey had also reached 3,026. Turkey showed the highest increase in average daily flights in Europe last year, with a 16% rise.
The European Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation (Eurocontrol) has released the 2023 European Aviation Overview report. According to the report, Istanbul Airport retained its top position as the busiest airport in Europe last year, just as it did in 2022.
In 2023, the average daily flight count at Istanbul Airport reached 1375, a 19% increase compared to the previous year. Furthermore, on June 22, 2023, Istanbul Airport broke the airport network record with 1684 flights.
Following Istanbul Airport, Amsterdam Schiphol with an average of 1255 flights, London Heathrow with 1251 flights, Paris Charles de Gaulle with 1247 flights, and Frankfurt Airport with 1179 flights were the busiest airports.
Last year, the average daily flight count in Turkey also reached 3,026. Turkey showed the highest increase in average daily flights in Europe last year, with a 16% rise. Thus, Turkey ranked 6th among the countries with the busiest daily flights (takeoffs/landings) in Europe last year. The countries with the highest average daily flight counts in Europe were the United Kingdom with 5,290, Spain with 4,616, Germany with 4,532, France with 3,999, and Italy with 3,500.
Furthermore, in 2023, the average daily flight count in Turkey was more than 8% above the levels seen in the year 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic.
