Euthanasia and “putting to sleep” gone in name only: Practice to remain unchanged

The term ‘euthanasia’ was removed from the AKP’s controversial regulation on putting stray animals to sleep but the practice remained the same.

The AKP had prepared a regulation that included “putting stray animals to sleep”. Before the regulation reached Parliament, public backlash led to the removal of the term ‘putting to sleep,’ replacing it with ‘euthanasia,’ which has the same meaning.

While this regulation was being discussed in Parliament, new developments emerged. According to AKP sources cited by DHA, the term ‘euthanasia’ was removed from the regulation.

Instead, the proposal now includes a clause stating that ‘the provisions of the third paragraph of the 9th article of the Veterinary Services Law shall be applied.’

Although this is presented as a change, the mentioned clause actually covers the regulation that the AKP originally intended to implement.
