Forest Fire in Çanakkale! Ship Traffic Halted

A forest fire has broken out in the Eceabat district of Çanakkale. The fire, which is being fought from the air, has led to a temporary halt in ship traffic in the Çanakkale Strait. The 57th Regiment Conkbayırı Martyrs’ Memorial and the village of Anafartalar have been evacuated as a precaution.

The fire started around 16:00 near Kumköy in the Eceabat district of Çanakkale. Driven by strong winds, the fire spread over a large area, prompting the dispatch of numerous teams to the scene. Efforts to control the fire continue both from the air and on the ground.

SHIP TRAFFIC HALTED IN ONE DIRECTION

Minister of Agriculture and Forestry İbrahim Yumaklı stated on social media that efforts to control the fire in Eceabat, Çanakkale, are ongoing, saying, “We are intervening in the fire, which started with stubble burning and spread to the forest, with 9 aircraft, 6 helicopters, 67 ground vehicles, and 362 forest heroes.”

The Ministry of National Defense (MSB) also made a statement regarding the fire affecting agricultural and forested areas in Eceabat, Çanakkale: “To support firefighting efforts in Eceabat, Çanakkale, two helicopters, one fire truck, one terrain vehicle, and personnel from the Land Forces Command have been deployed.”

MINISTER YUMAKLI: WE ARE INTERVENING WITH 362 FOREST HEROES

Minister of Agriculture and Forestry İbrahim Yumaklı provided an update on social media regarding the forest fire in Çanakkale: “Our intervention in the Eceabat fire in Çanakkale continues. The fire, which started with stubble burning and spread to the forest, is being tackled with 9 aircraft, 6 helicopters, 67 ground vehicles, and 362 forest heroes.”

The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure released a written statement regarding the forest fire in Eceabat, Çanakkale, stating, “Ship traffic in the Çanakkale Strait has been temporarily suspended in the north-south direction due to the forest fire near Akbaş. Ship traffic will continue in the south-north direction only.”

ENTRY TO HISTORICAL PENINSULA HALTED

The Çanakkale Governorship announced that Büyükanafarta village in the Eceabat district has been evacuated as a precaution due to the fire. The statement also mentioned that coordination efforts are ongoing and teams are mobilized both from the air and on the ground to control the fire. Visitors to the memorial sites and residents in the area are urged to be cautious. Additionally, the road between Kumköy and Büyükanafarta villages has been closed to traffic.

Teams continue their efforts to control the fire in the windy region both from the air and on the ground. Minister Yumaklı provided an update on the fire situation:

 “We received the first notification about the fire at 16:05. Our teams began their intervention at 16:11. As temperatures rise during this period, considering that this fire also started from agricultural land, we remind our citizens to be much more cautious.”
