According to data shared in the June bulletin of the Mediterranean Touristic Hoteliers and Operators Association (AKTOB), global wellness tourism is expected to exceed $8.5 trillion by 2027.
The AKTOB’s June bulletin provided the latest figures on wellness tourism.
Despite a severe downturn from $720 billion in 2019 to $351 billion in 2020 due to the pandemic, the global wellness tourism market has since rebounded and is now the top growth leader among 11 wellness markets.
Europe is at the forefront of the active wellness trend. This revitalized wellness concept, closely aligned with experiential travel, has seen drivers increase by 8.2% since 2019 and now represents 48% of Europeans’ motivations for choosing a destination.
In 2022, wellness tourism reached $5.6 trillion. Before 2020, the wellness economy had been growing robustly and outpacing overall economic growth for many years.
In 2019, the wellness economy reached $4.9 trillion, but it saw a 9.5% decline in 2020 due to the pandemic, dropping to $4.5 trillion.
