According to the latest reports published in the media, the heartbreaking deaths of a family of four staying at a hotel in Istanbul’s Fatih district continue to raise urgent questions. New details emerging from the investigation show that the incident may be closely linked to a poorly executed pest-control process, bringing serious negligence claims to the surface.
Uncertified Pest-Control Company and Untrained Staff
The owner of the pest-control company admitted that he had no certification or formal training for such operations. Even more troubling, it remains unclear whether the worker who carried out the spraying had any qualifications at all.
He explained that he visited the hotel around 4 p.m., mixed two pesticides—Alfax and Selpermentin—with water, and applied the mixture throughout the room using a one-liter spray pump. Afterward, he sealed the ventilation openings with tape to prevent the odor from spreading.
The Critical Mistake: The Family Re-entered the Room Too Soon
Despite the hotel owner’s statement that they normally keep rooms closed to guests for two to three days after pesticide application, the Böcek family re-entered their room just 1 hour and 43 minutes later.
The family had previously complained to the hotel about insects in their room—leading to the decision to have the room sprayed. But they were allowed back in far too early.
What Happened That Night: Claims About the Reception Desk
As the family fell ill during the night, reports claim they tried to reach the reception desk but received no response. Some allegations suggest the receptionist had locked the hotel and gone out to eat.
The part-time receptionist, a Pakistani national, denied these accusations, saying he had no responsibility in what unfolded.
A Widening Investigation
Before the pesticide angle became clear, four people connected to the family’s food consumption had already been arrested. Meanwhile, police continue to question both the pest-control team and hotel management. Items seized from the pest-control company’s storage area have been sent to the Forensic Medicine Institute for analysis, and several individuals are expected to be brought before the courthouse.
