A World Heritage Treasure in Turkey
Mount Nemrut, listed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site, is one of the world’s most remarkable open-air museums. Known for its colossal stone statues and stunning sunrise and sunset views, the site continues to draw tens of thousands of tourists every year.
Visitor Numbers Over the Years
In the past seven years, more than 1,038,000 people visited Mount Nemrut. The highest annual figure came in 2022, with over 229,000 visitors, while the lowest was in 2020, when only 56,000 people came due to the pandemic. In the first eight months of this year alone, 137,204 tourists—122,634 domestic and 14,570 international—explored the site.
Tourism Target for 2025 Season
According to Provincial Director of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Yelken, Nemrut continues to enjoy massive interest during the tourism season, which runs from April until early November. He shared that the site already hosted around 230,000 visitors this year and is expected to reach 310,000 by the end of the season, boosting regional tourism.
Ancient Statues Restored with Nanotechnology
Nemrut’s famous statues, built by the ancient Kingdom of Commagene, have been undergoing careful restoration. Yelken explained that a strengthening project is underway using nanotechnology to permanently repair cracks and apply antioxidant treatments to protect the monuments. The restoration project is expected to take five years, with two phases already completed.
Visitors Share Their Experiences
Tourists continue to be captivated by the mystical atmosphere of Mount Nemrut. Filiz Bilgili Çorak, visiting from Istanbul, said that although climbing was difficult, the breathtaking view made it worthwhile. Another visitor, Ramazan Çorak, who last came 30 years ago, described the site as still magnificent and invited everyone to experience it.
