Nobel-winning Turkish economist Daron Acemoğlu shared his thoughts on Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. elections, expressing that he feels worried and saddened by Trump’s win. Acemoğlu pointed to the Democrats’ failure to win over working-class voters as the main reason for their loss.
Acemoğlu, who received the 2024 Nobel Prize in Economics, commented on the U.S. elections in a series of posts on his X (formerly Twitter) account. “I feel worried and sad about Trump’s re-election. Unfortunately, we’re looking at years of turmoil and uncertainty,” he said.

Acemoğlu argued that rather than Trump winning, it was the Democrats who lost this election, primarily because they had failed to address the needs of American workers: “The Democratic Party has been losing the American working class for a while, and in this election, they did nothing to win them back.”

Acemoğlu, along with 82 other scientists, had signed a statement expressing concern that if Trump became president, he could hinder progress in fields such as science, technology, and climate change. They declared their support for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.
