Number of deaths exceed 20,000 in Kahramanmaraş earthquake

More than 100 hours have passed since the earthquake that caused great destruction in 10 cities of Turkey on February 6th. While the number of dead and injured is rising, search-and-rescue efforts are continuing, as well.

The destruction caused by the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that occurred in the PAZARCIK district of Kahramanmaras at 04.17 on February 6 had increased substantially with the second earthquake of 7.6 magnitude that occurred in the Elbistan district at 13.24.

After the earthquake that razed Kahramanmaraş, Adana, Adiyaman, Diyarbakır, Gaziantep, Hatay, Kahramanmaraş, Kilis, Malatya, Osmaniye and Şanlıurfa to the ground seven days of national mourning were declared throughout the country, and a state of emergency was declared for three months. Search-and-rescue efforts are continuing.

NUMBER OF DEATHS EXCEEDS 20 THOUSAND

As of 21.41, the loss of life was announced as 20 thousand 213, the number of injured was 80 thousand 52, the number of destroyed buildings was 6 thousand 444, and the number of buildings that received the “destroyed” notification was announced as 11 thousand 302.

In the 10 cities hit by the earthquake, 12 thousand 141 buildings and 66 thousand 58 independent sections are severely damaged or ruined.

About 76 thousand people were evacuated from the earthquake zones.
