Turkey’s political landscape entered a new chapter on Tuesday after Özgür Özel announced that he and a large group of lawmakers would establish a new political party, a move that could fundamentally reshape the country’s opposition.
Speaking during what he described as his farewell address at the parliamentary group meeting of the Republican People’s Party (CHP), Özel said the new movement would continue its political journey with the support of its members of parliament.
Although he did not reveal the name of the new party, Özel declared that it would immediately become the main opposition force in the Turkish Grand National Assembly due to the number of lawmakers expected to join.

Using a symbolic expression, Özel said, “We are not taking off our shirts in politics. We are putting on a shirt of fire together for the future of this country,” describing the challenges and responsibilities facing the new party.
