After the nuclear threat made by Russian leader Putin last week, the Ukrainian authorities began distributing iodine tablets to the public in preparation for a nuclear disaster.
While Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has been ongoing since February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the annexation of 4 regions in Ukraine last week, stressing that the threat of nuclear weapons is always on the table as an option.
While reactions from all over the world rose to Putin’s statements, the fear of a nuclear disaster prompted the authorities to act. In the capital Kiev, potassium iodine pills began to be distributed to evacuation centers in preparation for a possible Russian nuclear attack.
Potassium iodine pills, if taken immediately before or immediately after exposure to nuclear radiation, are known to help block the absorption of harmful radiation by the thyroid gland.
In case of the need for evacuation, the pills will be distributed to residents of the area affected by nuclear radiation, the Kiev city council said in a statement.
The recent defeats of the Russian military in Ukraine have raised fears that Putin will resort to a devastating nuclear attack to subjugate Ukraine.
The European Union announced that it had sent 5.5 million potassium iodide tablets to Ukraine to prevent a possible nuclear disaster after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and seizure of the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant.
